Willits is located 20 miles north-northwest of Ukiah, the “Heart of Mendocino County” & “Gateway to the Redwoods”.

Weather

The mountains to the west cause Willits to have a cool winter and hot summer climate. The July high is around 86 degrees. The January low is 33. There is occasional snow falls in Willits each year. Annual precipitation averages 51.4 inches a year, with most rainfall occurring between October and April.

MCHC Health Centers (mchcinc.org)
MCHC Health Centers operates three federally qualified health centers: Hillside Health Center in Ukiah, Little Lake Health Center in Willits and Lakeview Health Center in Lakeport. It serves all citizens of the county, including the indigent and low-income citizens. MCHC Health Centers offers primary medical care for adults and children, dental care for children and adults, behavioral health for adolescents and adults, and the largest women’s health center in the area: Care for Her. Specialty services include HIV care, orthopedics, and dermatology, among others. MCHC treats more than 500 patients per day, and their Care for Her doctors and midwives oversee more than half the births at the Adventist Health Ukiah Valley Birthing Center.

Adventist Health Howard Memorial is part of Adventist Health, a not-for-profit, faith-based health care system operating in California, Hawaii and Oregon. Founded on the Seventh-day Adventist heritage of Christian health care, Adventist Health is comprised of 17 medical centers with more than 2,600 beds, approximately 18,600 employees, numerous medical offices and outpatient facilities, the largest system of rural health medical offices in California with additional sites in Oregon, 14 home care agencies and four joint-venture retirement centers.

The Willits Unified School District serves 1550 students in grades TK–12 from the City of Willits and surrounding areas. Committed to the small campus environment Willits Unified is composed of four traditional schools: Brookside Elementary (TK-2), Blosser Lane Elementary (3-5), Baechtel Grove Middle School (6-8), and Willits High School (9-12). In addition to their traditional schools, their alternative programs offer students a variety of choices within our district’s governance: Sherwood Elementary (K-8), Sanhedrin Vocational Alternative High School (9-12), and New Horizons Independent Study (K-12).

Willits has several public parks for outdoor activities. The Recreation Grove and the Bud Snider City Park offer picnic benches, playgrounds and BBQ facilities. The Community Ball Fields and Willits Skate Park provide sporting facilities and the Frank Grasse Dog Park allows well-behaved dogs to get some off-leash playtime.

Annual events like the Black Bart Parade bring community members together to celebrate the town’s Old West heritage. And the Skunk Train is always a fun way to spend a few hours.

Because of its location in one of the most picturesque counties of Northern California, Willits is an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise. There are several excellent trails and nature areas for hikers, bicyclists and campers to explore in and around the Willits area. Little Darby Nature Trail, Jackson Demonstration State Forest and Brooktrails offer trails of various lengths and terrain.

Hunting & fishing are popular pastimes and provide year-round opportunities. Willits is situated within an hour of the Mendocino coast, Lake Mendocino and the Eel and Russian Rivers. Closer to home, Lake Emily and Lake Ada Rose in Brooktrails are favorite spots for trout fishing. Seasonal hunting is enjoyed on private ranches, in Jackson State Forest and in Mendocino National Forest north of Covelo.
